How All Terminals (清么九) works

A hand composed entirely of terminal number tiles, the 1s and 9s of the three suits, with every set a triplet of terminals and a terminal pair.

Only the 1 and 9 of characters, bamboo, and dots appear; no middle numbers and no honor tiles are used. Because runs are impossible with only terminals, the hand is necessarily all triplets (and kongs) plus a terminal pair. It is a limit-level purity hand, contrasting with mixed terminal-and-honor hands that also allow winds and dragons.

Good to know
  • No honor tiles are permitted; adding winds or dragons would shift it toward the lesser All Terminals and Honors pattern.
  • The structure is inherently all-triplet, so it overlaps with all-pung scoring concepts.
  • Every tile is a terminal, so the pair must also be a 1 or a 9.

All Terminals (清么九) — FAQ

Are honor tiles allowed in this hand?

No. Including any wind or dragon disqualifies the pure terminals pattern; that becomes the mixed terminals-and-honors hand instead.

Can it contain a chow?

No. Three consecutive tiles cannot be made from terminals alone, so the hand is always built from triplets and kongs.
