How Great Four Winds (大四喜) works
A hand containing pungs (or kongs) of all four wind tiles: East, South, West, and North.
All four wind triplets occupy every set slot, leaving only a pair to complete the hand. It is a top-tier limit hand and the stronger counterpart of Small Four Winds, where three winds are triplets and the fourth is the pair. Collecting four distinct wind triplets is extremely rare, which is why it sits at the maximum scoring tier.
Good to know
- •Distinguished from Small Four Winds, in which one wind appears only as the pair.
- •Since the four winds fill all four sets, the eyes must be a non-wind pair.
- •As a limit hand it generally overrides separate seat-wind and round-wind faan at most tables.
Great Four Winds (大四喜) — FAQ
Can a wind serve as the pair in this hand?
No. All four winds must be triplets or kongs, so the pair has to be a different tile.
How does this differ from Small Four Winds?
Small Four Winds has three wind triplets plus a wind pair, while the great version requires all four winds as triplets.
