Junchan (純全帯幺九)
3 han
Every set contains a terminal — no honors.
How Junchan (純全帯幺九) works
Junchan (terminal in every set) requires every set and the pair to contain a terminal tile (1 or 9), with no honor tiles anywhere.
Each run must be a 1-2-3 or 7-8-9, each triplet must be of a 1 or 9, and the pair must also be a terminal — all without using any honors. It works open or closed but drops one han when opened. It is the no-honors, stricter cousin of chanta and is often paired with sanshoku or ittsuu.
Good to know
- •No honors allowed — that is what distinguishes it from chanta.
- •Every group including the pair must touch a terminal.
- •Loses one han when the hand is open versus concealed.
Junchan (純全帯幺九) — FAQ
How does junchan differ from chanta?
Chanta allows honor tiles to satisfy the terminal-or-honor requirement; junchan forbids honors entirely, demanding a 1 or 9 in every group.
Does the pair need a terminal too?
Yes. The pair must also be a terminal (1 or 9); a simple or honor pair disqualifies junchan.
