How Yakuhai (役牌) works
Yakuhai is a triplet (or kan) of a value honor tile — any of the three dragons, your seat wind, or the prevailing round wind.
Completing a pung or kan of a qualifying honor grants this yaku. Each qualifying triplet counts separately, so multiple dragon or wind triplets each add their own han. Because honors can be called freely, yakuhai is the easiest way to give an open hand a valid yaku.
Good to know
- •Works open or closed; calling the triplet does not reduce its value.
- •A wind only qualifies if it matches your seat or the round; an off-wind triplet scores nothing as yakuhai.
- •The double-east (seat + round) wind triplet counts as two yaku because it satisfies both conditions.
Yakuhai (役牌) — FAQ
Does a triplet of an off-wind count?
No. A wind triplet only counts as yakuhai when the wind is your seat wind or the round wind; other winds give no yaku.
Do dragon pairs count?
No, only a triplet or kan counts. A dragon pair alone gives no yakuhai (though it matters for shousangen and the dragon pair fu).
