Melded Kong (明杠)
Melded kong (declared from a discard or an upgraded pon). Each melded kong adds 1 fan.
How Melded Kong (明杠) works
A kong (four identical tiles) declared by claiming an opponent's discard or exposing a draw, shown openly rather than kept concealed.
A Melded Kong is formed when a player openly declares four of a kind—either by claiming a discarded fourth tile or by adding a drawn tile to an existing exposed pung. Declaring it grants a replacement draw from the wall. The kong must be made from one of the two suits the player is not void in, as Sichuan provides no honor tiles to kong.
- •Distinct from a concealed kong, which is formed entirely from a player's own tiles and kept face down.
- •Each declared kong triggers a replacement draw, which can chain into kong-related winning timing.
- •The four tiles are always from a single number suit and never from the voided suit.
Melded Kong (明杠) — FAQ
How is a melded kong different from a concealed one?
A melded kong is declared openly, often by claiming a discard, whereas a concealed kong is built from your own tiles and laid face down.
Do I draw a tile after declaring a melded kong?
Yes. Declaring any kong entitles you to a replacement tile from the wall, since the kong's fourth tile would otherwise leave you short.
