How Five Concealed Pungs (五暗刻) works

All five sets are concealed pungs — 五暗刻, 8 tai at the top of the concealed-pung ladder.

Every one of the five sets is a triplet assembled by draw, which also makes the hand All Pungs and fully concealed by construction. Taiwanese counting is additive, so the 8 tai of 五暗刻 stacks with All Pungs, a flush if present, and the concealment or concealed-self-draw tai — which is how five concealed pungs in one suit reaches 21+ tai.

Good to know
  • A win by discard still qualifies when the discard completes the pair rather than a triplet.
  • It implies All Pungs, which stacks additively under Taiwanese counting.
  • Combined with Pure One Suit and concealment it produces some of the largest non-flower totals in the game.

Five Concealed Pungs (五暗刻) — FAQ

Can I win by discard and keep all five pungs concealed?

Yes, if the winning discard completes the pair. If it completes a triplet, that triplet counts as open and the hand drops to Four Concealed Pungs.

Does Five Concealed Pungs include All Pungs?

Structurally yes, and under additive Taiwanese counting both are scored — 8 tai for 五暗刻 plus 4 for 碰碰胡.
