How Sanshoku Doujun (三色同順) works
Sanshoku Doujun (three-color straight) is having the same numbered run in all three suits — for example 4-5-6 in characters, circles, and bamboo.
You need three chows of identical numbers, one in each suit, plus a fourth set and a pair to complete the hand. It is a closed/open yaku, but opening the hand by calling reduces its value by one han. It pairs well with tanyao, pinfu, and itsu-style hands.
Good to know
- •All three runs must share the exact same three numbers across the three suits.
- •Loses one han when the hand is open compared to fully concealed.
- •Distinct from sanshoku doukou, which requires three identical triplets instead of runs.
Sanshoku Doujun (三色同順) — FAQ
Do the three runs have to be the same numbers?
Yes. Each suit must contain the identical run (e.g. 2-3-4 in all three); differing numbers do not qualify.
Can the fourth set be anything?
Yes. Only three of the sets need to form the three-suit straight; the remaining set and pair are unrestricted.
