Concealed Hand (門前清)
No declared (open) melds and won by claiming a discard. The whole hand was hidden from opponents.
How Concealed Hand (門前清) works
A hand completed without ever claiming a discard for a meld — every set is self-drawn or held — and won on a discard.
The hand must stay fully concealed up to the winning tile, with no pungs, kongs, or chows exposed by claiming others' discards. In Hong Kong Old Style this faan is specifically the case of going out on a discard while concealed; a self-drawn concealed win is typically handled by the separate self-draw bonus. Concealed melds formed by self-drawn tiles are fine, including a concealed kong declared from one's own hand.
- •Claiming any discard to form a meld breaks concealment and forfeits this faan.
- •A concealed (self-drawn) kong does not break the hand, but an exposed kong does.
- •This pattern stacks with shape and suit faan since it only describes how the hand was assembled.
Concealed Hand (門前清) — FAQ
Does drawing my winning tile myself count here?
A concealed self-draw is usually scored under the self-draw bonus instead; this particular faan describes winning on a discard with a fully concealed hand.
Can I declare a kong and stay concealed?
Yes, a concealed kong from tiles already in your hand keeps the hand concealed, but melding a kong off a discard does not.
