Seat Wind (門風)

1 faan

A pung of your seat wind. The seat wind depends on where you sit relative to the dealer.

Example winning hand
Winning tile: 9m

How Seat Wind (門風) works

A pung (or kong) of the wind tile matching the player's own seat position at the table — East, South, West, or North.

Each round every player is assigned a seat wind, and forming a triplet of that specific wind earns this faan. It is awarded per the player's current seat, so the same wind tile that scores for one player is ordinary for another. A player can also score the prevailing (round) wind separately, and holding both can yield two wind triplets in one hand.

Good to know
  • Seat wind and round wind are scored independently; a triplet of a wind that is both earns credit for each.
  • Only the player whose seat matches the wind benefits — for everyone else that wind triplet scores nothing on its own.
  • A kong of the seat wind still qualifies just as a pung does.

Seat Wind (門風) — FAQ

What is the difference between seat wind and round wind?

Seat wind depends on your position relative to the dealer, while round wind depends on which wind the current round is named for. They are tracked separately.

Can one wind triplet count twice?

Yes. If your seat wind happens to equal the prevailing wind, a single triplet of it can earn both the seat-wind and round-wind credit.
