How Lower Tiles (下字) works

A hand composed entirely of the low numbers one, two, and three across the suits.

Every set and the pair must use only tiles numbered 1, 2, or 3, drawn from any of the three suits. Because each set spans only these values, the sets are typically the 1-2-3 chow, or pungs of 1s, 2s, or 3s. This is one of three parallel number-range hands and naturally excludes any honor tiles.

Good to know
  • Only tiles 1 through 3 are allowed; a single higher tile disqualifies it.
  • No honors, since honors carry no number value.
  • Because it includes the terminal 1, it cannot combine with All Simples (which allows only 2-8); it is one of three parallel number-range hands alongside Middle Tiles and Upper Tiles.
