How Middle Tiles (中字) works

A hand composed entirely of the middle numbers 2 through 8, containing no terminals (1 or 9) and no honor tiles.

Every tile in all four sets and the pair falls in the 2-8 range of the suits. The hand may mix chows and pungs freely as long as no terminal or honor appears. By excluding 1, 9, winds, and dragons, it inherently satisfies the no-terminals-or-honors condition.

Good to know
  • All tiles must be ranks 2 through 8; no 1s, 9s, or honors anywhere.
  • Both chows and pungs are permitted as long as they stay within 2-8.
  • Implies the absence of terminal and honor tiles in the whole hand.

Middle Tiles (中字) — FAQ

Is a 1-2-3 chow allowed?

No. The chow 123 contains a terminal (1), so it breaks the all-middle requirement.

Can the sets be a mix of chows and pungs?

Yes, as long as every tile used stays in the 2-8 range.
