Winning tile: 7s

How Upper Tiles (上字) works

Every tile in the hand is a high number — sevens, eights, and nines across the suits.

All sets and the pair are built exclusively from the numbers 7, 8, and 9 in any of the three suits, with no honors and no tiles numbered 1 through 6. The restriction shapes the whole hand into the upper band of values. Related restrictions on number range are inherent to this pattern and not scored twice.

Good to know
  • Only 7s, 8s, and 9s appear; no honors and no lower numbers.
  • It is the top member of a family that also includes middle-tile and lower-tile patterns.
  • Because the range is fixed, overlapping lower-range or honor-based patterns cannot apply.

Upper Tiles (上字) — FAQ

Are honor tiles allowed?

No. Honors are excluded; every tile must be a 7, 8, or 9 from the numbered suits.

Does it have to be a single suit?

No. The high tiles may come from any of the three suits, as long as all are in the 7-9 range.
