Winning tile: 1m

How Dragon Pung (三元牌) works

A pung or kong of one of the three dragon tiles — red (中), green (發), or white (白).

This tai is awarded for each completed triplet or quadruplet of a dragon tile, since dragons are always valuable honor tiles regardless of seat or round. A hand holding two dragon pungs plus a dragon pair forms Small Three Dragons, and three dragon pungs forms Great Three Dragons. Each dragon pung is counted on its own, so multiple dragon triplets each earn the tai.

Good to know
  • Each of the three dragon pungs scores separately when present.
  • Two dragon pungs together with the third dragon as the pair upgrade into Small Three Dragons.
  • All three dragon pungs form Great Three Dragons, which typically supersedes counting them as plain dragon pungs.

Dragon Pung (三元牌) — FAQ

Does a dragon pair earn this tai?

No. A pair of dragons is not a pung, so it does not score on its own — though it can serve as the pair in Small Three Dragons.

Do exposed dragon pungs still count?

Yes. Whether the dragon triplet is concealed or melded from a claimed discard, it still earns the dragon pung tai.
